Let Go

Twenty sixteen was in no way an easy year for me. I ended a relationship of almost two years with my first love, I grew apart from some of my best friends, and dealt with severe anxiety. It was a hard year, but it’s been a transformative year. I want to thank 2016 for making me stronger, for helping me discover more about myself, and for giving me an appreciation for life and the ones I love.  As for all of you, whatever happened, thank 2016 for the good it gave you and let the rest go.

Take Care of Yourself First

You know how on airplanes they always tell you to put your air mask on first before helping anyone else? Well in twenty seventeen I’m taking this plane safety announcement (oddly) to heart and focusing on myself. I’ve done so much for other people, but I forgot to take care of myself. I loaded my schedule up so much that I didn’t have time to watch my favorite shows or take time to do the things I’m passionate about, like dance. This year I vow to take time for myself and do the necessary things my body needs. Remember, put your mask on first.

Appreciate Those Around You

In college, you learn friends come and go. Your study buddy you saw almost every night now only waves to you in passing or the girls you went out with every night might now only be acquaintances. Things change, you change. But what I’ve learned is that I need to also put more effort into the relationships I want to last. I’m a repeat offender of blowing people off or making excuses for myself on why I don’t have time, but this year I’m going to make a conscious effort to spend more time with friends and family. This year gave me an appreciation for those who helped me this year. The ones who listened to me cry, the ones who made sure I was in bed after drunk dialing them, and to the ones who listened to me word vomit about my life, I want to thank you for all the laughs, the hugs, and advice you have given me.

Get Outside

There’s a reason we breathe easier outside, humans belong in nature. I’m not saying you should sell your house and sleep outside every night, but take some time in the new year to go for a run outside or if you’re not a runner take a walk with a friend. In twenty sixteen I definitely spent a little too much time inside either in my apartment or in the library, but this year I want to take at least fifteen minutes of my day to get outside and do something away from my computer and away from my phone.

Start Saving for a Trip

In twenty seventeen let’s start saving together, whether it’s a road trip with friends or a crazy spring break trip to Punta Cana or even a service trip learning how to save is something I’ve wanted to accomplish for a while and never seemed to get a grasp of it. Saving for a trip allows you to set goals, track your progress, and understand your finances. There are also some really great apps that help you do just that. One of my favorites is Daily Budget due to its useful features with a simplistic aesthetic and ease of navigation or if you’re looking for something a little more in-depth, try using Mint which is another application I use to help budget my money!

These are my 2017 New Year’s resolutions. I hope you can take them and make them your own. Comment below what your resolutions are for 2017!
